Last week, Steve and Jill visited the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film for their “Refined Irreverence” exhibition, celebrating fashion industry icon Carolina Herrera and the 35th anniversary of the House of Herrera.
As we’ve shared before, Steve and Jill are both high fashion appreciators, and in the business of interior design, many times what’s currently working in the fashion world will translate into what will be trending in the world of interior design.
Needless to say, this exhibition was inspirational on so many levels!
From SCAF FASH:
Presented by the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film and the SCAD Museum of Art, this exhibition marks the first museum showing of Herrera’s work. Featuring new and vintage designs from Herrera’s 1981 inaugural collection to the present, “Refined Irreverence” includes more than 75 garments showcasing the designer’s modern, dynamic classics.
Since launching her first collection in 1981 at the behest of legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, Venezuelan-born Herrera has become synonymous with effortless elegance and modern refinement. “I have a responsibility to the woman of today — to make her feel confident, modern and above all else beautiful,” Herrera said. Curated by Rafael Gomes, SCAD director of fashion exhibitions, “Refined Irreverence” includes runway looks, day wear, and bridal and red-carpet gowns worn by Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Tina Fey, Renée Zellweger and Lucy Liu, as well as ensembles from Herrera’s personal collection.
“Refined Irreverence” is curated by Rafael Gomes, SCAD director of fashion exhibitions.
While enjoying the exhibit, Steve and Jill noted a few standout items…
Herrera’s designs are classy, comfortable and certainly functional – her use of pockets is brilliant and it’s obvious that to her (and we agree) – white blouses rule!
She experiments with new materials – digitally printed fabrics, printing on squares of foam, connecting them to build an amazing, large floral bridal skirt. Her appreciation for unique materials and how they work to create new fashion is evident and makes us want to be even more forward thinking with our own textile and interior designs.
“I have a responsibility to the woman of today – to make her feel confident, modern and above all else beautiful.”
~ Carolina Herrera
Isn’t this a lovely sentiment? And it’s obvious, based on this exhibit and her work over the years, she is achieving her goal.
“Refined Irreverence” is running through September 25, 2016 and we urge you to make a trip to SCAD FASH and experience Herrera’s work for yourself in this outstanding exhibition.
We are thrilled for our upcoming Modern Mix book signing with Eddie Ross and partner Jaithan Kochar, in celebration of their recently released book – taking place at the steve mckenzie’s showroom on Thursday, October 8th from 5-8PM. Mark your calendars now… This fabulous event is not to be missed!
We shared in an earlier blog post, the history we have with Eddie and Jaithan, and we truly couldn’t be more excited for this book signing… Not only is it going to be super fun, but Steve and Eddie will be reunited, thanks to this whirlwind of events surrounding this new book release!
Eddie and Jaithan are such wonderful people, with an absolute talent for creating warm and welcoming spaces that are sure to take your breath away!
And, if Eddie is behind an event, you know it’s guaranteed to be unforgettable!
The couple’s unique aesthetic and genuine sense of humor are evident throughout the pages of Modern Mix, and will certainly be evidenced at our upcoming book signing event!
Don’t allow yourself to miss this fun evening full of friends, fabulous finds and amazing designs – not to mention the cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres!
We’re thrilled to share that in partnership with our neighbors, Verde Home, Steve McKenzie will be launching a new rug collection, to be previewed at the upcoming “What’s New What’s Next” event at the New York Design Center!
In addition to Steve’s fine artwork, textile collections and the steve mckenzie’s showroom, he’s now taken his design prowess to the ground level, by designing a collection of fine quality, handmade area rugs for Verde Home.
Steve’s distinctive aesthetic translates beautifully from his art and textiles to what we consider “art for the floor.” Verde Home’s philosophy of style and sustainability fits seamlessly with his stylistic attitude, an attribute apparent in the beautiful designs featured in this inaugural rug collection.
In addition to previewing his new rug collection for Verde Home, Steve will also be attending “What’s New What’s Next” as a panelist for New York Spaces’ “Progressive Design Panel,” in part with Grange Furniture, taking place Thursday, September 17th at 3:45PM in suite 201 at the New York Design Center.
Other panelists include Stacy Garcia and Kimberly Lewis. Jason Kontos, Editor-in-Chief, New York Spaces, will lead the discussion.
If you’ll be attending WNWN, we hope you’ll visit Verde Home and catch a glimpse of this new collection by Steve McKenzie, and join in on his panel discussion Thursday afternoon!
What a highlight for our week, last week – steve mckenzie’s was featured on the Annette Joseph Style blog this past Thursday!
And we couldn’t have asked for a better description: “A Home Store with Heart & Soul.” They get us. A big shout out to writer, Nicole M. Letts, the gal behind the fabulous blog Probably Polka Dots, who authored this post – thank you Nicole!
We had such a wonderful time sharing a bit about us, the business and what makes us special, and we couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful post featuring steve mckenzie’s!
In addition to really “getting” us, and our aesthetic, the post features a bit about our store merchandising and some of our favorite products, carried in the showroom…
Please click here to read the full post and check out the Annette Joseph Style blog – it’s one to save for your regular blog perusal!
And if you haven’t been to the showroom recently, we invite you to come check out everything we have going on. We’ve been working on re-merchandising the store, with new merchandise arriving weekly, and would love to see what you think about it!
We’re so thrilled to have the opportunity to share a guest blog post by our friend, and magazine editor, Lisa Mowry! Lisa is the genius behind more than 1,000 features for national and local magazines. Needless to say, she knows a bit about what it takes to have a space highlighted in a publication and why some stories just don’t make the cut.
Lisa Mowry has been a home and garden writer, editor and stylist for 25 years. She is the homes editor for Atlanta Magazine and Atlanta Magazine’s HOME, plus the regional editor for Better Homes & Gardens, Traditional Home and all their special interest magazines such as Country Home, Beautiful Kitchens & Baths, Décor, Elegant Homes and Country Gardens.
Without further ado, we give you Lisa’s take on 5 Reasons Your Interior Designs May NOT Be Published…
I get excited when I go to my inbox and see a designer’s name with the subject line, “New Project.” –I never know when the most amazing house will appear before me with all sorts of possibilities for one of my magazines. But sometimes the house in front of me may be beautiful—I may even wish I could move right in myself—yet it’s not a fit for the publications I work with. Here are a few reasons why:
1.It’s not unique enough. If a living room looks “showroom perfect,” that may be impressive to neighbors, but magazines need more depth and personal style. Just as in the world of fashion, often the best rooms have one unexpected element, or may include features both expensive and budget-friendly. Always a pleasure to see: original art, layers of visual interest, and good use of color. I see a lot of swanky white kitchens, for instance, (and included in that category are light gray and light beige) because we all love a light-and-bright place to eat and cook, but the magazines need to show ideas beyond white.
Interior designer Chenault James’s house for a Columbus, Georgia client hit a homerun with Traditional Home magazine, thanks to its classic lines with a few important twists: great architectural elements in the form of metal French doors and windows and the ceiling treatment, plus her clever mix of patterns while still maintaining a serene color palette. Professional photography by Emily Followill enhanced the project even more.
2.Your scouting photography doesn’t capture the space well. I depend on designers and architects to send me photos of their projects a lot of the time. Are professional photographs good to send? Yes, they can be helpful, but rarely tell the whole story. Magazine editors need more than one “money shot” of a room; we need to see all angles, vignettes and details, plus exteriors, and outdoor spaces. Good non-professional shots can be sufficient and are almost always needed to supplement professional photos. Don’t use a wide-angle lens and do turn off most lamps in a room so the lighting is more uniform. An artsy detail of a fern on a coffee table may be something you want for a blog post, but editors don’t need that sort of thing.
This master bedroom in a coastal cottage in Watercolor, Florida will be featured in Décor magazine. Rich pops of color and salvaged doors distinguish it from a typical beach-house look…nice work by Tim Adams. High ceilings don’t feel too large, thanks to the wood-plank walls and large-scale furnishings. Photography: Emily Followill
3.Your projects are too something: too big, too small, too low-end, too high-end. Cavernous two-story living rooms often don’t have a charm factor readers are looking for, and on the other end, the blogging world is filled with first homes having similar DIY looks.
Condos can be a harder sell for magazines because there often isn’t as much architectural charm, but interior designer Helen Davis’s own loft has the advantage of brick walls and an arched window, plus her own swanky furnishings: a colorful mix of vintage, repurposed and personal accessories. Atlanta Magazine has covered her place, and it will also appear in BH&G’s Refresh later this summer. Photography: Sarah Dorio
4.There’s not enough to show. I can’t do much with one room, and designers often send me just the living room or dining room. Occasionally a unique room might work for a magazine (We have a regular feature in Atlanta Magazine called “Room Envy,” for instance), and some spaces such as kitchens or porches can warrant a whole feature, but in general, know that your chances to get published are limited with only one area.
Designer Sherry Hart took this scouting photo of a Buckhead project herself, but put the time into styling and getting the lighting right to accent this Zen-like bathroom. The bathroom itself combines textures and materials in a fresh way, and it will be featured in the fall issue of BH&G’s Kitchen & Bath Ideas.
5. Your project is over-exposed. Be careful not to let every blog around publish your best work; editors tend to shy away from homes where those good ideas have already been shown. That brings up some Magazine 101 refreshers: Don’t submit a project to more than one magazine at a time, and don’t always have your work in the same magazine. Once you get a reputation as a regular contributor to one publication, it can hurt your chances with others.
Wow! This is some fantastic – and super interesting info – for both designers and interior design appreciators alike… It’s amazing all that goes into the production of some of these beautiful home features!
A giant thank you to Lisa Mowry for taking the time to author this wonderful guest blog post and for sharing some of her behind-the-scenes tidbits on working with some of our favorite shelter publications!

We are so honored to share that our very own Steve McKenzie has been selected as an artist to spotlight on a favorite blog of ours, The English Room!
The very sweet and talented Charlotte-based Designer, Holly Hollingsworth Phillips reached out to Steve with a list of questions – some of which really made him think – and she’s shared his responses in an “Artist Spotlight,” published earlier this week…
Holly, in her fabulous office space.
Click here to view the spotlight post on The English Room and learn a few things about Steve you may not have known already; for instance, what’s his dream commission? Dream trip? And much more!
A hint of Steve’s dream commission… A fantastic space of Holly’s design, recently published on Dominomag.com.
A big thank you to Holly for featuring Steve in this very fun blog series – we’re all big fans of yours, and your work and it’s such a treat to see Steve’s work and words published on The English Room!
Last week when the October/November 2014 issue of Peachy the Magazine came out, we were absolutely ecstatic to see our own Steve McKenzie featured within the pages of this fabulous digital publication!
Steve’s art is the focus of Peachy’s Artisan Spotlight and this piece highlights his process and how it’s translated to some of the products available through steve mckenzie’s.

As you know, we’ve got our second anniversary party coming up this Thursday evening and we are in the midst of party prepping. But, we thought we’d take a moment and share a few details about the upcoming soiree…
First and foremost, we need to give our friends at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles a BIG shout out, as they’re sponsoring our event – and we’re looking forward to celebrating with many of our community’s design tastemakers, thanks to them!
In addition to yummy southern-themed bites, we’ll be offering guests our party’s signature cocktail, the “Buckhead Betty,” thanks to the folks at American Spirit Whisky.
We’re almost as excited for this cocktail, as we are that Amercian Spirit Whisky will be relocating their distillery to Atlanta! Welcome to our new neighbors!
Although the company, food and drinks are sure to provide a lot of fun, we’ll also be previewing several new lines steve mckenzie’s is now carrying. This includes a fantastic brand of modern outdoor furnishings, Kannoa…
And a line of stunning nature-inspired accessories, by RabLabs, which includes unique photo frames, like this one:
The team here at steve mckenzie’s has also recently acquired some stunning antique French mirrors and objets you just have to come in to see!
Finally, Steve’s new art studio and the new McKenzie Design Services studio will be on preview as well!
We’re so thrilled for our big event coming up, and look forward to celebrating with you Thursday!
Ever heard of Parlore? Chances are, you haven’t yet… And that’s okay, because as Founding Adviser Designers, the team here at steve mckenzie’s is thrilled to have the first opportunity to share a bit about this awesome new project management app, specifically geared toward interior designers!
Now, it won’t launch until this fall, but we’re already chomping at the bit, waiting for this app to take off!
We originally heard about this fantastic project from designer Amy Flurry, who’s also Parlore’s Creative Director. We’ve been such big fans of Amy for so long, we knew that whatever she’s involved in would be awesome. And from what we’ve seen so far, Parlore is no exception.
This app is all about streamlining the interior design process for professionals – bringing designers and manufacturers together in one place that will act as a resource for anything from inspiration to specific items, which designers can access right there from the Parlore marketplace.
As Founding Adviser Designers we’re in fabulous company with some of our favorite interior design industry friends, including…
Lucy Farmer
And…
Dayka Robinson
Take a look at the Parlore site and share your thoughts with us! As a designer, is this app something you’ll try out?!?
A Sputnik chandelier always makes a statement.
A vibrant orange Sputnik chandelier always makes a BIG statement.
And that’s exactly what Steve McKenzie was going for when he had this especially funky Sputnik chandelier installed above the main gathering space in the outdoor living room he was charged with in the recent Holiday Showhouse for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.
Believe it or not, this spunky light fixture has a place in just about any style space. Check out the “Sputnik Love” board on the Pinterest page for steve mckenzie’s, just to get an idea of all the ways these astonishing pieces can be used.
Here at steve mckenzie’s we love using a Sputnik to offer a modern element and provide some creative tension with otherwise classical and traditional style. They’re especially beautiful over a classic round pedestal table in a foyer or even grouped at different heights in a soaring entry! Sputniks are fabulous over a dining table because of the openness it provides – never impeding sight lines. In a bedroom they are great over the bed, and depending on the style can really bring an element of fun (bright colors) or of luxury with crystal bulbs.
The biggest pitfall to watch out for when using a Sputnik to always keep scale in mind. If using a Sputnik over a dining table, make the longest arms 2/3 of the width of the table. Likewise, when scaled too small, they can look silly especially in a grand room. If you need more of a statement, group them!
Our friends at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles also have a love for the Sputnik! They picked the chandelier, selected by Steve for the outdoor living space, as one of the noteworthy items from their Holiday Showhouse, and highlighted it in their “New + Next” feature in the February 2014 issue!
In fact, a half-page spread was devoted to the statement made by a good Sputnik. Steve McKenzie was quoted in this piece, sharing…
“Lighting is to interiors what jewelry is to fashion; a statement piece that can set the tone for the room. A Sputnik chandelier adds instant energy, texture and a sculptural element – without overpowering a space.
So, have you been turned on to finding the perfect Sputnik for your space yet?!? Or, if you’re lucky enough to already have your home bedazzled by your very own Sputnik, please share what you love most about it!
Here’s to the jewelry that is fabulous lighting and the timelessness of the Sputnik chandelier!
Recently, our own Jill McKenzie was quoted for a holiday tabletop article for the AJC by Merlisa Lawrence Corbett. The article shares some fantastic tips and ideas for creating the perfect setting for all of your holiday tables… And, as you’re surely aware, we’re in crunch time for holiday gatherings!
In this luxe tablescape, we used Royal Crown Derby china, Baccarat glassware, Reed and Barton cutlery and vintage brass candlesticks.
So, if you’ll be hosting any seasonal soirees, read below to learn what our top four elements to any tantalizing tablescape are:
THE Tablecloth – it’s the base of your entire tablescape and sets the mood for the entire gathering. Anything from fine linen textiles to an antique quilt may be used. Just make it interesting and make it YOU.
An easy formula for a classic tablescape is to begin with a white or cream tablecloth then dress it up or down with runners, squares, etc.
Linens from Le Jacquard Francais, such as their 69″x69″ squares are a fantastic addition, when placed as a “diamond” in the center of the table. The offer wonderful color and interest!
Individualize Place Settings – add a personalized touch to your table by using different pieces at everyone’s place. And be sure to pull out the fancy china for these gatherings! After all, what are you saving it for?!
It’s also a smart idea to use little place cards, especially for a larger group, as this makes selecting a seat effortless and you can assist with the flow of conversation by specifically selecting who will sit where.
Considerate Centerpieces – the formula for a sensational centerpiece is simple = keep it low or very high, not in between. You want to ensure your guests can see each other across the table! Teak and resin candle holder – use with taper candles or votives!
Add a “wow factor” with fabulous candle holders and candelabras, mix in natural elements and create a few simple floral arrangements with grocery store flower or even greenery cuttings from your own backyard. Ivory and gold “fishnet” tapers
OR, if you have simple candle holders, a fabulous set of taper candles may be all you need to add a bit of oomph to your table!
R. Wood’s Chartreuse colorway
Unexpected Colors – add a third color into your holiday tablescapes to shake things up a bit… Try green, red and gold or green red a silver. OR, consider a unique hue of green. We love R. Wood’s super saturated chartreuse color, which really adds a lot of brightness to a tabletop.
*BONUS TIP: Set your table in advance – at least a day prior to your event. Take this opportunity to play around with your tablescape and even “audition” different centerpieces or serving pieces. Layout a place setting then walk away. As you move throughout the space, you’ll know how you like it or how it could be improved.
This New Years Eve buffet is fit for a celebration, thanks to the beautiful Match Pewter, stunning (yet care-free) acrylic glasses and original works by Steve McKenzie.
As our favorite, festive time for the year quickly approaches, an organized mindset will be your best friend. So, get to organizing those holiday tablescapes now! See other inspirational ideas in the AJC article and for some hands-on assistance, come into the steve mckenzie’s showroom today, where our team can help guide you to a sensational seasonal tablescape for your gathering.
To us here at steve mckenzie’s, Monderisim is represented by the architecture and furniture design following World War II. It began as a response to the rapid advances in technology and how we could live using these new materials and manufacturing techniques.
Ville Savoye by Le Corbusier
Modernism was founded in Architects such as Le Corbusier, a French-Swiss architect who designed iconic buildings like Ville Savoye. Le Corbusier sought to create structures and furniture that responded to the crowding of urban cities. His lines are both graceful, yet paired down and facilitate a tranquil living amongst the chaos of the city.
Corbu LC04 Chaise Lounge
Steve and Jill consider themselves lucky to live with the Corbu LC04 Chaise Lounge, in hide, by Le Corbusier – it’s a showstopper!
Another modernist who really inspires Steve is Alvar Alto. He was a true renaissance man with accomplishments in architecture, design, textiles and glassware. His lines are timeless and their function is unparalleled.
Alvar Alto’s Savoy Vase
Alto’s Savoy Vase in White glass for iittala is a go to wedding present for us; it’s beautiful on any table with just about any floral arrangement. Steve and Jill’s favorite is gardenia floating in their grey glass Savoy Vase.
Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Egg Chair
Arne Jacobsen one of the founders of the Danish modern movement; again, a man of many disciplines of design. His architecture and furniture have become the icons of the modern movement. Steve would put an egg chair in every interior if he could. To him, it is the icon of the modern movement. Steve and Jill also live with an egg chair in a black boucle; always a popular seat at cocktail parties!
Ray and Charles Eames
Ray and Charles Eames come to mind next. A duo of unparalleled creativity, they really shaped how the United States moved into the modern world. From logos and art experiences, to furniture, architecture, and textiles. They really defined what modern means to the US.
Herman DCW Moulded Plywood Chair
If you have not seen it, watch the documentary on their lives, “Charles and Ray Eames: The Architect and Painter.” They were an amazing force of influence. Steve and Jill live with their Herman DCW Moulded Plywood Chair in Walnut for Herman Miller – can you tell we have a thing for classic chairs here?!?
These are but of few of the modernists that inspire Steve and our work here at steve mckenzie’s. For us, to create spaces with interest and comfort, it is important to have several styles and periods represented. One of the best ways to bring in that feel is the juxtaposition of a modern chair or sideboard with Louis IV side chairs, etc. We’ve shared our love for the Danish Modern Furniture movement before, and are continuously drawn to the clean lines, honest woods and timeless style that truly represents what Modern means to us.

February was a fabulously fun and busy month for us! First, our son’s rehearsal dinner and beautiful wedding at The The Stave Room (stunning photo backdrop, thanks to ASW Distillery) and then we hosted a baby girl shower for our oldest daughter who is expecting their first child very soon.
So, please enjoy some moments of pink and gold happiness from the Atlanta and NYC Baby Girl celebrations, perhaps taking some notes on recipes and decor for your next celebration.

steve mckenzie’s Cypress Loop Sketchbook for all your thoughts and dreams
Dear Friends,
Change is always happening in the world and we want to let you know about some changes at steve mckenzie’s. Before we get into the changes, we want to thank you for your loyal dedication to our business. When we began this endeavor over 6 years, we had no idea how many friends and supporters we would come to know. We are eternally grateful for all of our friends we have made in the Atlanta design community and all of the consumers who have fallen in love with our product offering in the store.
We recently began an evaluation of our entire business model and have made some decisions about the next steps for our business. Therefore we have made a decision to close the retail portion of our business. However, you can’t get rid of us that easily.
Steve will continue with the McKenzie Design interior design business as well as producing his art and fabric, licensing for his art, rugs for Verde Home, stationery, and more. Also stay tuned for his first licensed furniture collection. Steve will also continue the classes that have become so popular (and sell out so fast). In fact, his design and art studio will remain at our current address and he loves visitors, always.
Verde Home, our fantastic business neighbor, will take over our retail space and will also continue to offer the Selamat Designs furniture and lighting line. Jill will join Verde Home as sales and outside sales to interior designers, thus expanding her offerings to include the full complement of Verde Home lines plus Selamat and Steve’s fabrics and wallpapers.
Now the majority of our current products need to be sold, and we will begin the sale March 7th.
However as a thank you to you, our loyal customers, please visit us before then for best selection and know we’ll pass on our best price.
We will continue to sell in the space through April 30th. Verde Home will officially take over the space May 1st.
In closing, know that we sincerely appreciate your support. We ask that you spread the message of Steve’s growing interior design and art business. If you are one of our trade customers, look for Jill to contact you soon to share all the lines she now represents and if you need to see her sooner, please contact her.
Many paths have opened on this amazing journey and we are grateful for each of you along these paths, and hope you celebrate this next chapter with us. We look forward to seeing each of you soon.
Sincerely,
Jill and Steve McKenzie

As our family had the privilege of recently hosting our own rehearsal dinner, I want to share some thoughts while they are still fresh in my mind. Traditionally, the rehearsal dinner is held the night before the wedding and hosted by the groom’s family. It’s the vehicle to gather the close family, attendants, officiant and bridal couple together, break bread, and fellowship together, and kick off the Big Event with food and merriment.
Take a look at these top tips for a successful, relaxed rehearsal dinner ~
1. Choose a style that is distinctly different from the wedding.
Not wanting to compete with the black tie optional wedding, we went the other way – a pizza truck! Here we used black and white gingham tablecloths from steve mckenzie’s, pulled up a wood-fired pizza oven food truck, and served ice tea, beer and wine. Father of the groom, Atlanta interior designer Steve McKenzie created the lush winter floral arrangements. Festive color-coordinated napkins from Dot and Army completed the table. More about their easy napkin rental program soon…
The wedding is the main event, so offering a different experience to the wedding party gives them a more complete weekend.

Any well done event, especially a wedding, follows a curated path of carefully chosen details. From the save the date to the invitation to the floral, consistent colors, fonts and written tone set the stage for your special day. 3. Choose the Rehearsal Dinner Menu Secondly to Wedding Menu
The wedding menu plays a starring role in the event, and the budget. Tastings are held, serving pieces are surveyed, table-cloth colors are coordinated, all these details culminating in this once in a lifetime event. The rehearsal dinner should coordinate with this evening, not compete with it. Southern Crust Catering food truck provided this complement to the sit-down dinner on Saturday night.

You know we love art. Love art, think art, talk art, see art and make art. Last week we had the pleasure of experiencing an original exhibit at the Museum of Design Atlanta. Perfect date night on a cold evening.
Have you visited Atlanta’s Museum of Design Atlanta ? Yes? Great! Have you seen the current exhibit, Text Me: How We Live in Language? No? You need to experience it!
First, what is this museum? MODA believes that design is a creative process that can solve problems, transform lives, and make the world a better place. The museum’s exhibitions and programs exemplify this belief. Located within the Midtown Arts Corridor since 2011, MODA is the only museum in the Southeast devoted exclusively to the study and celebration of all things design.
Now, let’s get the details on Text Me: How We Live in Language which is an original exhibition curated by internationally renowned designer, writer, podcaster and brand strategist Debbie Millman. Over 60 designers and artists explore typography’s power and pervasiveness across every aspect of our lives. Through interactive, immersive experiences, Text Me showcases many of the ways we use typography to document every aspect of our existence.

Originally used as a towel in the ancient Hammam spa or Turkish bath, a Fouta can be used as a bath towel, beach towel, a wrap, a throw, a runner on a table, a tablecloth, a picnic blanket, a scarf and so much more.
steve mckenzie’s is excited to carry this stunning, high quality line of Fouta towels. These generously sized (38″ x 78″) fashion Fouta towels are all handwoven using 100% natural cotton. It is a wonderful luxurious, absorbent, and soft bath towel, which can be matched with their coordinating guest towels to create a beautifully cohesive and practical pairing. Being softer and thinner than terry towels, Fouta towels dry quickly which is a big plus in the bathroom.
In addition to the original Fouta towel, we’ll also be offering an array of guest towels, which make fantastic gifts! Consider them an ideal host(ess) gift, wrap around the neck of a nice wine to bring to a dinner party, or even decorate your tabletops with them and create an especially memorable tablescape.
In addition to the traditional Fouta towels, we’re thrilled to also offer a fabulous collection of throws and pillow covers, offering our customers and clients an opportunity to bring this luxurious textile into their homes in unique ways. They can even be worn as a wrap on a chilly evening!
Visit the steve mckenzie’s showroom soon to experience these fantastic textiles for yourself – it’s all in the details, and we assure you these won’t disappoint.
As a fun aside, these products are a favorite of Stacy Kunstel, the gal behind another fabulous new home decor brand available at steve mckenzie’s, Dunes and Duchess!
We’re so excited to know – how do you see these new textiles being used in your home/lifestyle?!?
Have we got a tabletop for you on the second installation of our Tabletop Tuesday series! The colors, textures and patterns all blend to create an absolutely delectable setting, which will be ideal for any springtime gatherings from Easter and beyond. Today, we’re pleased to share our “Mikado Modern” tablescape with you..
For this tablescape, we turned to what has become a favorite collection of ours, initially introduced a few years ago by Royal Crown Derby, the Mikado collection. Mikado is an updated, contemporary take on a traditional pattern, first introduce in 1894. The individual pieces tell the story of the beloved opera, The Mikado. Respecting its past, yet appropriate for today’s modern lifestyle, is what we love about this pattern. The bright colors solicit feelings of fresh blooms, crisp spring air and bright sunny walks.
For this tablescape’s floral element, we were able to partner again with Erin Weston of Weston Farms. The timing could not be more perfect for us to incorporate the Japanese magnolia blooms, forsythia and redbuds, all combined with Weston Farms’ fantastic magnolias.
Our antique, French table provided a perfect backdrop for our table setting once again.
A lovely Le Jacard Francais runner was the base of our setting.
The RCD Mikado, in a lavender colorway is the base of our place setting.
We then layered the settiing with a turquoise salad plate and a lime bread and butter plate.
This cutlery is what we have at home and, to us, the ivory evokes the feel of a bygone era.
Clear, stemless glasses for the wine and water were chosen, so as not to compete with all the color we already have going on in our tablescape.
For the main centerpiece, Erin put the RCB Mikado canister in blue to use as a vase. It was then coupled with some blue and white ware with a variety of spring blooms
We even incorporated this beautiful crystal votive, in Green Calcite, by Tish Mills of Harmonious Living and paired it with only the Stamens and Carpels of the magnolia blossoms.
Next, to celebrate the Asian feeling of the china, we added my favorite 3 Emperors bejeweled by Eric Cortina.
In the end, the table appears set for a king, or at least anyone celebrating the upcoming Easter holiday, or any spring occasion!
The full Mikado collection can be viewed here – the color combinations are absolutely fantastic!!
Will you be incorporating any Mikado pieces into your Easter and spring-themed tablescapes?!? We’d love to hear how you incorporate color and we hope we’ve inspired you to think a bit outside the box with your upcoming tablescapes!
